Writing Battles
Write words to defeat monsters. A simple idea, but one that powers our game universe and takes your word count to new heights!
Battle Basics
90% of the monsters in 4thewords, and unless otherwise indicated, are “regular” word battles. We also have two other battle types:
A regular monster has two important attributes that dictate how hard the battle will be:
- Word count: number of words you have to write to defeat it. A word is any string of characters preceded and followed by a space.
- Time: the minutes you have to write your words in order to win. Time begins when the battle starts and runs continuously (leaving the page won’t pause a battle).
We have over 500 monsters with different combinations of words and time, making for an exciting variety of choices with which to challenge your writing on a daily basis.
When you’re fighting a regular monster we’ll track both of these attributes on the write page.
The top progress bar indicates how many words you’re missing and the bottom bar indicates how much time is left.
Monster Drops
Every monster has a unique set of items it will “drop” as a reward when you defeat it. These items are added automatically to your Inventory once the battle ends.
You can see a monster’s Drops listed below them in the Adventure Wilderness page or by clicking on the “i” icon that opens a monster’s information window.
Some items will drop in quantities larger than 1. When that’s the case they fall in a range (between 1 and 5 for example) and we’ll display a number within that range.
Drops aren’t guaranteed as they can be affected by the rarity of an item. Your Hero’s Luck attribute affects your chances of getting certain items. The higher your luck the more likely you are to get an item. More information on Luck in the “Battle Stats” section below.
Hover the image of an item to bring up more information about it:
Click the “i” icon to open the item’s information window which will show what monster’s drop that item or what markets you can buy/craft it:
You can then hover over a monster to add it to your Battle List and get that item or click on the Market’s name to be taken to it.
Dust Warrior Tip: you can hover over most monster and item images on the site to get to these information windows. Great for hovering over monsters in a quest and adding them quickly.
Monster Requirements
Some monsters have certain requirements you have to complete before being able to add them to your Battle List.
You can see a monster’s requirements on the Wilderness page or on their information window:
In this case 10 Leaves will be removed from your Inventory when you add the monster to your Battle List. If you decide to remove the monster from your list the items will be returned to your Inventory.
